What is Aimovig?

Aimovig is an innovative medication developed by Amgen, designed to prevent migraines before they start. It functions as a monoclonal antibody that targets and blocks the receptors of specific peptides believed to trigger migraine pain. By intervening in this way, Aimovig migraine treatment prevents the transmission of pain signals, potentially reducing the frequency of migraine attacks.

Clinical Trials and Results: Aimovig’s effectiveness was demonstrated in several clinical trials. In these studies, participants experienced fewer monthly migraine days compared to those on a placebo. For example, in one study, participants saw an average reduction of one to two migraine days per month, which, while modest, can significantly improve quality of life for chronic sufferers.

Comparing Aimovig to Migraine Surgery: While new drugs like Aimovig offer hope, it’s important to consider all options. In my practice, we often see patients who have tried multiple treatments without success. For these patients, migraine surgery, or nerve decompression, might be a viable next step. This surgical approach typically offers more dramatic improvements, potentially reducing migraine occurrences by 50% or more, with many patients experiencing complete cessation of their symptoms.

The Role of Nerve Blocks: Before considering surgery, we use nerve blocks to diagnose and temporarily relieve pain. These injections, which include a local anesthetic and sometimes steroids, can also help predict the effectiveness of surgery. While steroids take longer to reduce inflammation and can initially irritate the nerve, causing more pain, they are valuable diagnostic tools. A positive response to a nerve block often indicates a good prognosis for surgery.

Personalized Treatment Approach: We recommend a comprehensive approach to headache pain. Whether it’s a newer medication like Aimovig, lifestyle changes, or considering surgical options, patients should be open and educated about their options. Not every patient will benefit from the same treatments, and while Aimovig is promising, it’s one of many tools used to combat migraines.  Drugs such as Aimovig are provided by neurologists, while surgeons such as myself treat patients using techniques of nerve decompression.

Aimovig FAQ

How Does Aimovig Work? Aimovig targets the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) pathway, known to play a crucial role in migraine attacks. Unlike traditional medications, Aimovig is designed to block the CGRP receptor, preventing the peptide from binding and initiating the pain and inflammation associated with migraines. This targeted approach makes Aimovig a groundbreaking treatment in preventing migraines before they start.

Is Aimovig the Same as Botox for Migraines? While both Aimovig and Botox are injectable treatments for preventing migraines, they work quite differently. Botox prevents migraines by temporarily paralyzing muscles and preventing those muscles from squeezing nerves that carry pain signals to the brain. If Botox works for you, this means that nerve compression is your problem, and headache surgery will likely provide relief.  Aimovig, on the other hand, specifically targets the CGRP pathway, offering a non-paralytic way to combat migraines. Both have their place in migraine management, but their mechanisms are distinct.

How Long Do Aimovig Side Effects Last? Most side effects of Aimovig are mild and temporary. The most common side effect is injection site reactions, which typically resolve within a few days. Other potential side effects like constipation or muscle spasms are usually short-lived. However, everyone’s body reacts differently, and it’s important to monitor your response and consult with your neurologist if you experience any prolonged issues.

How Long Does Aimovig Take to Work? Many patients report feeling the effects of Aimovig within the first month of treatment. However, it can take two to three months for the full benefits to be realized. Patience and consistent treatment are key to determining how well Aimovig works for you.

How to Inject Aimovig? Aimovig is administered using a prefilled autoinjector pen, designed for easy, once-monthly use at home. Your doctor or neurologist will provide detailed instructions and can guide you through the process during your consultation. It’s injected subcutaneously, typically into the thigh or abdomen, making it a convenient option for continuous migraine prevention.

How Long Does Aimovig Stay in Your System? Aimovig has a half-life of about 28 days, which is why it is administered monthly. This means that it gradually decreases in your system over a few weeks, maintaining its therapeutic levels to effectively prevent migraines throughout this period.
